Secondary Prophylaxis

Part of the reason Liddy is having his third operation is due to him not keeping on track with his strict program of monthly antibiotic medication.

This treatment is called Secondary Prophylaxis.

Every 3 to 4 weeks children and young adults who have known Acute Rheumatic Fever or established Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD) must take an injection of the antibiotic Penicillin.

This stays in the body and releases slowly over time.

If the patient is exposed to the Strep bacteria during this time the Penicillin neutralises it, preventing any further damage.

But you have to stick to the program set out by the health clinic doctor.

Just 1 day late for an injection and a young person is once again at risk.

For those on a regular injection program:
To stay alive and well…
Get injections on time, every time.
